Features

This pavement was designed to keep roads in cold, snowy regions from icing. The pavement inhibits ice formation on roads. The deformable portions allow the load of passing vehicles to break up and detach ice and to inhibit black ice from forming in winter.

Schematic

Construction involves cutting grooves of 6-12 mm wide by 6-12 mm deep at intervals of 25-60 mm into asphalt pavement, semi-flexible pavement or concrete pavement. The grooves are injected with a rubbery urethane-based resin.

Construction procedure

As shown in the procedure, the Grooving Urethane Method is used to construct anti-freezing pavement as follows: Grooves are cut, a polymer is applied, urethane resin is injected, silica sand is spread and the surface is polished.
